I honestly didn’t expect the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino to come back in 2026.
But here we are.
The wildly colorful drink that took over social media back in 2017 is back at Starbucks for a very limited return, and I have to admit, the combination of nostalgia and curiosity is working on me. The Unicorn Frappuccino is available for just August 15 and 16, so this is definitely one of those drinks you either try now or wait another few years and wonder what it tasted like. (About Starbucks)
And yes, I want to taste it.
What Is the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino?
The Unicorn Frappuccino is a creamy, mango-flavored blended drink topped with whipped cream, colorful toppings, and that famous tangy blue drizzle.
It is also completely different from the usual Starbucks coffee drinks.
There is no espresso hiding underneath all those colors. Instead, it is much closer to a sweet, fruity dessert in a cup.
That may actually be the best way to think about it.
Starbucks has brought back the original 2017 version, rather than creating a new interpretation of the drink.
What Does the Unicorn Frappuccino Taste Like?
This is the part I’m most curious about.
From people who have tried it during the current return and from Starbucks staff who tasted it during training, the drink seems to be a pretty intense combination of sweet mango flavor and sour candy-like tang.
The blue drizzle is where things apparently get serious.
Some tasters describe the sour component as extremely strong, while others actually enjoy that sharp contrast with the creamy, sweet base. In other words, this isn’t a subtle little sour note that disappears after the first sip.
And honestly, that’s exactly why I want to try it.
I love the idea of a drink that starts off creamy and fruity and then suddenly hits you with something sour.
Would I love it?
No idea.
Would I finish the whole thing?
That might depend on just how sweet it really is.
The Unicorn Frappuccino Is More Dessert Than Coffee
One thing seems pretty clear: this isn’t the drink I’d order when I need caffeine to get through a busy afternoon.
It’s much more of a fun dessert drink.
The mango flavor gives it a tropical fruitiness, while the whipped cream and sweet components make it feel more like a colorful frozen treat than a traditional Starbucks beverage.
And then there’s the appearance.
The pink-and-blue color combination is obviously part of the appeal. The drink was practically designed for Instagram back in 2017, and its return is bringing that same nostalgic feeling with it.
Some people may be ordering it because they genuinely remember loving it.
Others will probably order it simply because they need to know what all the fuss was about.
I’m definitely in the second group.
Would I Order the Unicorn Frappuccino?
Absolutely—but mainly because I missed the original experience.
I’m especially interested in the sour blue drizzle. That’s the component that seems to divide people the most. Some people love the sour candy-like kick, while others think it overwhelms the rest of the drink.
For me, that’s enough of a reason to try it.
I also think the timing makes this return more fun. Starbucks isn’t bringing the Unicorn Frappuccino back for weeks and weeks. It’s a one-weekend-only return, which makes it feel more like a little food event than another seasonal menu item.
So if I see one today, I’m getting it.
I may love it.
I may decide the sour drizzle is completely wild.
Or I may take one sip and suddenly understand why people have been talking about this drink for almost a decade.
Either way, I’m curious.
And sometimes that’s exactly what a fun food trend is supposed to do.
